Able Seaman Raymond Burton
North Atlantic Escort Duty on the HMCS Merrittonia
Decommissioning
After the war in Europe had ended, the ships were no longer needed. The Merrittonia made stops in Sydney and Halifax, N.S., and then was taken to Sorel, Quebec, where she was decommissioned and sold off as surplus.
The Merrittonia was "paid off" on July 11, 1945, and sold to the K.C. Irving Ltd. company. Unfortunately, on November 30, 1945, she was wrecked off the coast of Nova Scotia while being towed to her new home.
